In Korea, typically protests tend to be loud yet peaceful affairs with police on standby just in case things go awry. Today, hundreds of union workers who gathered near Seoul’s City Hall, pushed the envelope a bit too far and things became a bit chaotic with hundreds of policemen forming perimeter barricades and trying to to quell an uneasy situation. The barricades were anything from human shields to police busses that were parked to block the streets completely. At one point mace was used by the police to disperse the union workers who became more aggressive and vocal quite rapidly.
Having lived here for over two years now, I’ve seen plenty of protests but this was the first time I’ve seen the police go into action against a protest that got out of control. Watching the drama unfold, it was tense at times but quite exhilarating to watch.
